Introduction to Mass Communications-Week 4

Monday, 28/6/2010.

We proceeded to Chapter 7, skipping Chapter 6, saving it for later. Radio In The Digital Age. Miss Zee showed us around 7 videos regarding the history of radios, the pioneers and many more. One new vocabulary was the word "payola" which is where the recording companies bribe radio stations in order to get more airplay for their artistes.

Having a web-site is considered the ultimate success for radio stations as they have more mediums to advertise products as well as interact with their audiences. We then learned about radio networks, which are companies that actually OWNS the radio stations, such as AMP Radio Network.

Sometimes, radio stations subscribe to syndication programs, for example, Hitz.fm. There are a certain time of the day where the listeners will be entertained by Rick Dees, which obviously is not a local DJ. This is called syndication and the radio station will have to pay a certain amount of money for the program they subscribe to. We had also learned about the basics, such as AM and FM as well as how do they work and why is the frequencies of the radio stations differs in different states.

Tuesday 29/6/2010

On Tuesday we learned about Broadcast Television. A new vocabulary for the day was communal experience, which where everybody share the same experience, for example, the World Cup event. Everybody knows it's happening, even those who dislike football.

Apart from that we learned some basic history on broadcast television, VCR, the terms involving VCR and many more. The lecture session finished earlier that day and we proceeded to do some tutorials before heading to another room to watch a performance.
